(Except otherwise stated, all Bible quotations are from the New King James Version).
The name “Jesus” can easily be confirmed to be the most commonly invoked name on earth. It’s the one name people readily call in time of danger. People invoke the name of Jesus to protect them from harm and to keep them safe in times of crises. Whether it’s in a plane malfunctioning in midair, a car skidding off the road or a capsizing boat at sea, almost every one screams the name of Jesus when faced with danger, expecting to be saved thereby. Does the name of Jesus protect one and all in time of danger? Is everyone who calls on that name assured of protection from the powers of darkness, irrespective of the person’s relationship with Jesus Christ? We shall examine the Scriptures to answer these questions.
The Scriptures are very clear about the fact that the name of the Lord is a strong tower, into which the righteous run for safety. We’re also told that whosoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Furthermore, the Bible also tells us that at the mention of the name of Jesus, every knee shall bow, and demons are cast out. There’s no doubt therefore about the power in the name of Jesus. The name is above all names in heaven and on earth. The name of Jesus saves, delivers, heals, casts out demons and protects from harm and evil.
Proverbs 18:10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower;
The righteous run to it and are safe.
Romans 10:13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Philippians 2:9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name,
Philippians 2:10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,
Philippians 2:11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Truly, demons and other powers of darkness recognise Jesus Christ as the Son of God and the head of all principalities and powers, and they also understand he has the powers to destroy them. They thus bow at his feet and flee away at the mention of his name. Equally as important, the powers of darkness know and recognise true servants of the Most High God, and submit to the authority of God they wield on his behalf. Demons and elemental powers are subject to children of God at the mention of the name of Jesus. That’s part of our inheritance as children of God. Because we are Christ’s and because we possess his Spirit, Christians have the power of attorney to act on behalf of Christ. We are officially licensed to use his name and authority in our walk with him and in his service. Christians are authorised to ask God for anything in the name of Jesus Christ, including help in time of need.
Mark 1:21 Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught.
Mark 1:22 And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
Mark 1:23 Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out,
Mark 1:24 saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”
Mark 1:25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!”
Mark 1:26 And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.
Mark 1:27 Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.”
The Acts 16:16 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling.
The Acts 16:17 This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, “These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.”
The Acts 16:18 And this she did for many days.
But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour.
Luke 10:17 Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”
Luke 10:18 And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
Luke 10:19 Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Luke 10:20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”
Mark 16:14 Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen.
Mark 16:15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.
Mark 16:16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
Mark 16:17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;
Mark 16:18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
John 14:12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.
John 14:13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
John 14:14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.
Apart from Christians, can other people with no faith relationship to Christ call upon that name in the midst of trouble and expect deliverance? Is it everyone who invokes the name of Jesus, when faced with the powers of darkness, that demons obey? Despite the power in the name of Jesus, the Scriptures make the fact clear that the name of the Lord is only effective in the mouths of the righteous. The name of the Lord is indeed a strong tower, but only the righteous who run into it are protected and kept safe. An unrighteous person is not guaranteed safety if they invoke that name, simply because they are not in Christ! If you’re not called by the name of the Lord, calling the name of the Lord won’t help you, except you’re calling him for the salvation of your soul! Only believers in Christ are assured of successfully using the name of Jesus to cast out demons and procure deliverance from the powers of darkness. Only people who know the Lord, through the new birth experience, can invoke his name for protection. Demons and agents of darkness only recognise and tremble at the name of the Lord Jesus when it proceeds from the mouths of believers. Satan and his angels do not bow or tremble when unbelievers invoke the name of the Lord. The rascal seven sons of Sceva learnt this the hard way, when the demons in a demon-possessed man pounced on them and beat them to pulp, because the demons did not know them as servants of the Lord Jesus Christ! Demons only respect and obey the authority in the name of Jesus when believers and servants of Jesus use that name by faith!
The Acts 19:11 Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul,
The Acts 19:12 so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them.
The Acts 19:13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, “We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.”
The Acts 19:14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so.
The Acts 19:15 And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?”
The Acts 19:16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
The Acts 19:17 This became known both to all Jews and Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
In conclusion, the name of Jesus Christ is truly a powerful shield and buckler, and a refuge in time of trouble. Demons tremble before that name and flee at the mention of it. Healing and deliverance are effected just by invoking that wonderful name. Despite the power in the name of Jesus, not everyone can use that name for protection, defence and exorcism. Only the righteous find safety in that name. Only believers in Christ can use that name for healing and deliverance. In times of crises, only those who know the Lord can invoke that name for protection. Thus, the name of Jesus is not an amulet that can be used by one and all for protection in times of danger. If you don’t know Jesus, you can’t successfully use his name to fight off agents of darkness. If demons don’t know you as a servant of Jesus Christ, calling his name against them will only earn you more trouble! For the name of Jesus the Christ to work for you, you must first have Christ in you. You must first be born again and then you’ll have the right to use that name authoritatively against Satan and his agents.
